BOARD OF SELECTMEN
Minutes
April 3, 1996

Board met in Regular Session 7:30 p.m. in their Meeting Room in Abbot Hall

Present (constituting a quorum):

Anthony M. Sasso, Town Adminstrator


Motion made and seconded to approve the minutes of the meetings of March 27, 1996, and March 30, 1996. All in favor.

SENIOR CLASS CARNIVAL. Cyra Noorani appeared before the Board to request permission for the Marblehead High School Senior Class to hold the annual carnival at Devereaux Beach on May 8th through the 11th. The Class will provide the Selectmen with a certificate of insurance in the amount of $1 million liability naming the Town of Marblehead as an additional insured.

SCHOOL DEPARTMENT. Dr. George Gearhart, Assistant Superintendent of Schools, appeared to inform the Board the School Department is signing a seven-year contract with NYNEX.

GRANT. PWED. A letter was read from members of Old Marblehead Improvement Association suggesting formation of a special committee as it relates to the PWED grant. The Board took the request under advisement.

LICENSE. Seasonal All Alcoholic. Eastern Yacht Club. Motion made and seconded to approve the Seasonal All Alcohol License for the Eastern Yacht Club for the year 1996. All in favor.

Seasonal Wine and Malt. Dolphin Yacht Club. Motion made and seconded to approve the Seasonal Wine and Malt License for the Dolphin Yacht Club. All in favor.

One-day Entertainment License. Motion made and seconded to approve the request of the Dolphin Yacht Club for a one-day entertainment license for the use of a stereo and recorded music at a private party on May 4, 1996 from 3 p.m. to 12: 15 a.m. All in favor.

One-day All Alcoholic License. Motion made and seconded to approve the request of the Dolphin Yacht Club for a one-day all alcoho]ic beverage license for use on May 4, 1996 from 3 p.m. to 12: 15 a.m. Vote was 4 to 1 with Mr. McNulty opposed.

OLD TOWN HOUSE. Selectman Purdin was appointed as a Committee of One to investigate the rules for the use of the Old Town House.

PUBLIC HEARING. Cat Island. A public hearing was held relative to the recent name change of Cat Island to Children's Island. Jean Eldridge and Nathalie Woods spoke against such a name change, citing the history of the Island. Jim Hunt and Darrell Gallant explained the reasons behind the Y. M. C. A.'s request for this name change. Selectman Conly gave a report on the extensive research he had done on the Island. Motion made and seconded that the Board send a letter to the United States Board of Geographic Names requesting reconsideration of the renaming of Cat Island to Children's Island. The vote was 3 in favor with Mr. Peck and Mrs. St. Laurent in opposition.

Motion made and seconded to adjourn at 9:05 p.m. All in favor.
